Industrial Design Registration

An Industrial Design is the ornamental aspect of a useful article. To be eligible for the protection in Sri Lanka the Industrial Design must be original or novel and registered at the National Intellectual Property Office. Protection of an Industrial Design means that it may not be copied or imitated without the Registered owners consent.
Protection is given for a limited period of five years which could be extended for two more periods of five years each on payment of renewal fees.

Procedure for Registration

An Application for the Registration of an Industrial Design should be made to the Director – General in the prescribed Form accompanied by

  1. The prescribed fee
  2. The name, address and description of the Applicant,
  3. The specimen of the article or copies of photographic or graphic representation or drawings of the design,
  4. Indication of the kind of products for which the Industrial Design is to be used indicating the class or classes in which such products are included, and
  5. A declaration by the Applicant that the Industrial Design is new to the best of his knowledge.
